Daytime Sleepiness and Hyperactivity in Children With Suspected Sleep Disordered Breathing

The study aimed to assess excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and hyperactivity in children with suspected sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and correlate these symptoms with overnight polysomnography (PSG) results. The study involved 108 children with S-SDB and 72 control subjects. The researchers used the modified Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and the Conners Abbreviated Symptom Questionnaire to evaluate sleepiness and hyperactivity, respectively. The results showed that children with S-SDB had higher ESS scores (indicative of increased daytime sleepiness) and higher Conners scores (indicative of hyperactivity) compared to control subjects. Around 28% of patients with S-SDB had EDS. The researchers also performed PSG on the S-SDB patients and found weak correlations between ESS scores and certain PSG parameters. However, these correlations did not remain significant after adjusting for multiple comparisons. Overall, the study suggested that children with S-SDB were sleepier and more hyperactive than control subjects, but further research was needed to confirm these findings in a larger population.
